# Abilities

Abilities are special moves or passive buffs/debuffs that can dramatically swing the outcome of a battle. These abilities can be triggered by SOMOs during a battle (as opposed to regular attacks) and are determined by a combination of Class, Power Type, Affinity and Evolution Tier of the SOMO.

There are two types of abilities: Active Abilities and Passive Abilities. Each SOMO can have multiple Active and Passive abilities; but only one Active Ability can be brought into battle. SOMOs begin with limited abilities at basic evolution tier and level with more being unlocked at higher levels and evolution tiers.

### Active Abilities

Although SOMOs can possess multiple Active Abilities, only one can be brought into battle. This choice can be the difference between winning and losing battles, so must be made wisely. To use an Active Ability, a SOMO must charge it's Power Gauge by both dealing damage to and sustaining damage from enemy SOMOs.

### Passive Abilities

All of a SOMOs Passive Abilities are equipped during a Battle, however certain requirements must be met for the Passive Abilities to be effective. Passive Abilities are always on once these conditions are met.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://whitepaper.somo.xyz/new-trainers-guide/somos-core-playable-characters/abilities.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
